Term 1 Particles Flashcards
what are the 3 main states of materials and matter?
solid, liquid and gas
what type of change is a change of state?
physical change
What do you call a change that you can undo?
reversible
what do you call a state of change you can’t undo?
irreversible change
explain the changes of state water can go through from ice to water vapour
ice (solid) melts above 0 degrees to become water (liquid), water boils at 100 degrees and evaporates to become a gas. It cools to become water, then freezes at 0 degrees to become ice
when does water boil?
100 degrees Celsius
when does water freeze?
0 degrees celsius
what is a newtonian liquid
doesnt follow the rule of liquids can be hard to pour and doesnt fill container that it is poured into e.g. cornflower and water.
Describe the particles in a solid
regular pattern, vibrates in a fixed position, are very close together
Describe the particles in a liquid
irregular pattern, move randomly, are close together
Describe the particles in a gas
are randomly arranged, move in all directions, travel in random speeds
how do we work out density (how tightly particles packed)
mass /volume
what is filtration?
separating a solid from one that can be dissolved to one that cant
what is evaporation?
separates a liquid and solid by boiling off the liquid
what is distillation?
separates liquids with different boiling points
