List the 4 steps of the RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Step 1 = Analyse the job
Step 2 = Decide on the recruitment process
Step 3 = Draft the advert
Step 4 = Place the advert
Explain the difference between INTERNAL and EXTERNAL recruitment
INTERNAL = promotes from within the organization with existing employees
EXTERNAL = advertises outside the organization looking for new employees
List 2 ADVANTAGES of INTERNAL recruitment
- Know the skills and abilities
- appointment is quick
- no recruitment/training costs
- motivates workers to work towards a promotion
- keeps skills in the company
List 2 DISADVANTAGES of INTERNAL recruitment
- may lead to biased appointments (friendships within the business)
- workers who are not successful are jealous
- no fresh people/ideas from outside
- creates another vacant position
List 2 ADVANTAGES of EXTERNAL recruitment
- less chance of biased appointments
- chance to improve employment equity
- fresh skills/ideas to the business
- wider selection of people to choose from
- recruitment agencies are used to save time
List 2 DISADVANTAGES of EXTERNAL recruitment
- takes longer
- costs extra money
- may drop morale of workers who applied (no chance of promotion for them)
- not sure if new person will fit in with the company’s culture
What steps are to be taken once a position was left vacant after someone has been promoted in a company?
Step 1 = analyse the job
Step 2 = decide on the recruitment process
Step 3 = Draft the advert
Step 4 = Place the advert
-read applications & compile a shortlist
-phone the applicants, set-up interviews
-based on notes from interviews held,
compile a 2nd short list & schedule 2nd
round of interviews and include senior
management who will have the final say
-before the interviews, call the references
and check the character & work ethic
- finalize interviews, offer the position with
a contract of employment

Explain to the workers how the LRA defines LEGAL and ILLEGAL strikes
LEGAL (protected strikes)
- dispute has been referred to the CCMA
- 30 days to have passed after it was
referred
- workers will have a certificate to say the
dispute is unresolved
- workers give the employers 48hrs notice in writing of their intension to strike
ILLEGAL (unprotected strikes)
- any workers who provide an essential
service
- workers are bound by an agreement that
they are not allowed to strike
- the dispute still needs to go to the Labour
Court for arbitration

Provide 3 reasons why a worker might be DISMISSED
1) MISCONDUCT:
Breaking a workplace rule (assault/theft)
2) INCAPACITY:
Unable to perform expected duties (a
worker cannot be fired for suffering
from poor health)
3) OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Worker is no longer needed because the
situation of the business has changed or
the business cannot afford to employ
the worker (this is called retrenchment)
A worker who works full time, is entitled to the following breaks…
- 60-minute meal break after 5 hours of
work - daily rest period of 12 hrs
- weekly rest period of 36 hrs
