Term 1 L8: Descriptive Stats Flashcards
two types of stats DS and IS
descriptive stats (describing populations nad samples Central tendency - mean -median -mode
Dispersions
- ranfe
- variance
- SD
Inferential statsitics drawing conclusions about a popialtion based on data obtained from a sample
continuous and discrete variables
DVs onky take a countable nubmer of usually whole nubmers (nominal ordinal)
continous variables can take any value within thier range including fractions they are measured on a continuum (interval ratio)
measures of central tendancy
Mean
Median
Mode
Mean
the average
the total divided by the nubmer of scoires
interval and ratio (not meanigful for nominal or ordinal although tecchincally possible)
median
what level
the middle value
splits the distriution into two qual parts so that 50% of the values are above the median and 50% are below the median
can be oibtained for ordinal interval and ration vairalbe ut not nominal as they cannot be ranked
Mode
most Hz occuring value
only measure of central tendancy that can be used for nominal data
there can be more than one mode
Measures of dispersion
range
variance
sd
Range
differnce between the max and the min vlaue
used with ordinal interval nad ration varianles
variance
The sum of the __ from the mean divided by the __
measures disperion based on the deviations of scores from teh mean
The sum of the squared deviations from the mean divided by the population size
The average of the squared deviations
can be calaculate for interval nad ration variables
standard deviation
the square root of the variance the average deviation of values from the mean
can be calcualted for interval and variable rations
