Mental health
State of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution on his or her community.
Physical health
Relates to. The sufficient functioning of the body and its systems and includes physical capacity to perform tasks and physical fitness
Social health
Being able to interact with other and participate in the community in both an independent and cooperative way
Physical development
Changes to the body and its systems ( changes you can see and changes you can’t see )
Intellectual development
To the process that occurs within the brain and to the increasing complexity of the brain ( changes to the brain )
Emotional development
The development of the full range of emotions and the optimal way of dealing with them and expressing them
Physical development examples
- changes in height
- increasing size of the heart
- changes to sex organ function during puberty
Social development examples
- learning behaviours such as table manner and using cutlery
- roles and expectations
- values and beliefs
Intellectual development examples
- more complex as people develop
- memory
- language (the way it is used )
WHO definition of health
Defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
disability adjusted life years DALYs
A measure of burden and disease, one year equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury
Burden of disease
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries. Specifically it measures the gap between current health status and an ideal situation where everyone lives to an old age free of disease and disability
Prevelance
The number or proportion of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
Life expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to life, it is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if death rates do not change.
Incidence
Refers to the number (or rate ) of new cases of a disease/ condition in a population during a given period.
