Tense Formation Flashcards
Present
Find stem by removing -er, -ir, or -re, and add ending.
Avoir, aller etc. are irregular.
Conditional
Add endings to the infinitive (or the infinitive - -e for -re verbs).
There are many irregulars, including avoir, être, faire, and aller.
Past perfect
Made of a subject, an auxiliary verb, and a past participle.
Regular past participles: -er to -é, -ir to i, -re to u.
Most verbs take avoir, vandertramps and reflexives take être.
If using être, the verb must agree with the subject.
Past imperfect
Remove -ons from the present nous form and add endings.
Être is the only verb with an irregular stem.
Past pluperfect
Formed like the perfect, but with the auxiliary in the imperfect tense.
Near future
Formed using the present tense of aller and the infinitive.
Simple future
Add endings to the infinitive (or the infinitive - -e for -re verbs).
There are many irregulars, including avoir, être, faire, and aller.
Imperative
Only used in the tu, vous, and nous forms.
Vous and nous are formed as they would be normally in the present tense.
Regular -er verbs lose the -s from their present form.
There are many irregulars, including avoir, être, and savoir.
Present participle
Formed by replacing the -ons of the present nous form with -ant.
Irregulars include avoir, être, and savoir.

Conjugate être to decide the tense. Add a past participle.
Perfect infinitive
Formed by adding a past participle to the infinitive of avoir or être.
Present subjunctive
Formed by removing -ent from the present ils/elles form and adding an ending.
Irregulars include avoir, être, aller, and faire.
Future perfect
Created like to past perfect, but with the simple future form of the auxiliary.
