Q

Describe the location of integral membrane proteins N and C termini after reaching the plasma membrane

A

-depends on the topology of the protein
- If the protein is a single-pass transmembrane protein, the N-terminus are on the extracellular side and the C-terminues are on the cytoplasmic side

-If the protein is a multi-pass transmembrane protein, the N and C termini could be on either side of the membrane

Q

What happens to a protein that only has an N terminal ER signal peptide and does not get their mannose phosphorylated?

Q

What happens to the N terminal ER signal peptide of a secreted protein?

A

The N terminal is cleaved off by signal peptides during protein translocation into the ER. The mature protein is then transported to the Golgi apparatus for further processing and secretion

Q

What happens to a protein that has an N terminal ER signal peptide and an ER retention sequence?

A

The protein will be translocated into the ER but will be retained in the Er.. The ER retention sequence prevents the protein from being transported to the Golgi apparatus and beyond
