Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe Flashcards
1
Q
Primary auditory cortex
- location
- function
A
- BA 41 and BA 42
- responsible for the basic auditory functions
2
Q
Secondary auditory cortex
- location
- function
A
- BA 22
- higher auditory processing, eg music
3
Q
Wernicke’s area
- location
- function
A
- posterior to BA 22
- understanding speech (making sense of the words)
4
Q
Inferior temporal gyrus
- location
- function
A
- under the collateral sulcus
- visual recognition (the apple story of senses)
5
Q
Medial temporal lobe
A
related to the hippocampus (learning and memory)
6
Q
Significance of planum temporale
- how did we know the size??
A
- the reason why humans can have complicated speech
- this region refers to the Superior Temporal Gyrus, BA 22 and Wernicke’s area
- it is up to 10x bigger in the left hemisp than the right
=> measurements include surface area, cytoarchitectonic studies, asymmetry in white matter volume and myelination
7
Q
Primary visual cortex
- location
- function
A
- BA 17, along the CALCARINE FISSURE
- processing orientation, spatial frequency, color of objects
8
Q
Visual association cortex (secondary areas)
A
- higher order of processing visual info, motion, shape
9
Q
Importance of the calcarine fissure
A
In our visual field, information from the bottom will be presented above the calcarine fissure and vice versa
