Temporal Bone Flashcards

1
Q

Squamous Portion

A

lateral part of skull:

  • smooth surface where muscles attach (jaw and neck, temporal muscle)
  • zygomatic process (support for eye socket)
  • mandibular fossa: where mandible articulates

medial surface–> part of cranial cavity where temporal lobe rests

Q

Mastoid

A

Externally, serves as an anchor for shoulder and neck muscle attachment. Internally has the extension of the middle ear space that is honeycombed

Sigmoid sulcus-part of veinous drainage from posterior part of brain

Q

Petrous Part

A

Boundary between posterior (cerebellum and brainstem) and middle cranial fossa (where temporal lobe of cerebrum is, auditory cortex VIII nerve enters here)

Q

Endolymph

A

transported by vestibular aqueduct, higher concentration of K+ to Na+, similar to intracellular space allows hair cells to function
