Temporal Bone Flashcards
Squamous Portion
lateral part of skull:
- smooth surface where muscles attach (jaw and neck, temporal muscle)
- zygomatic process (support for eye socket)
- mandibular fossa: where mandible articulates
medial surface–> part of cranial cavity where temporal lobe rests
Mastoid
Externally, serves as an anchor for shoulder and neck muscle attachment. Internally has the extension of the middle ear space that is honeycombed
Sigmoid sulcus-part of veinous drainage from posterior part of brain
Petrous Part
Boundary between posterior (cerebellum and brainstem) and middle cranial fossa (where temporal lobe of cerebrum is, auditory cortex VIII nerve enters here)
Petrous Pathway
Jugular foramen
Internal auditory meatus
Vestibular aqueduct:
Cochlear Canaliculois
Endolymph
transported by vestibular aqueduct, higher concentration of K+ to Na+, similar to intracellular space allows hair cells to function
Cochlear canaliculous
transmits perilymphatic duct, contains perilymph
Vestibular aqueduct
transports endolymphatic duct and contains endolymph
internal auditory meatus
transports VIII, VII and labyrinthe artery
Perilymph
Higher concentration of Na+ than K+, similar to extracellular fluid
Perilymphatic Duct
continuous with perilymphatic space within inner ear, communicates with CSF
Inferior Face
Styloid Process, external carotid foramen, jugular fossa, transverse venous sinus
Styloid Process
helps attach muscles to, no hearing function
styloidmastoid foramen: forms exit from temporal bone of VII, end of facial canal
jugular fossa
part of jugular foramen, runs between temporal bone and occipital bone
Tympanic Portion
thin sheet of bone making up anterior and inferior part of ear canal
tympanic ring
groove tympanic (annulic) sulcus
ear drum is attached
notch: tympanic notch of ravinius
