Temporal Bone Flashcards
Petrous pyramid
Dense bony part that dominates the endocranial aspect; separates the temporal and occipital lobes.
Squama
Forms cranial walls to articulate with the parietals
Auditory meatus
Ear hole
Zygomatic process
The suture on the zygomatic arch
Suprameatal crest
“Canal” on the posterior end of the zygomatic arch
Supramastoid crest
Posterior extension of the suprameatal crest
Parietal notch
A notch posterior to the zygomatic arch and suprameatal crest on the temporal bone
Mastoid process
“Nub” below the parietal notch
Mastoid foramen
Near posterior end of the mastoid process
Mastoid notch
Groove that runs through the mastoid process
Stylomastoid foramen
Posterior to the base of the styloid process, “for the exit of the facial nerve (cranial nerve 7) and the entrance of the stylomastoid artery”
Occipital groove
Medial to the mastoid notch; a shallow furrow that lodges into the occipital artery
Tempomandibular articular surface
Spot where the mandible articulates
Articular eminence
Forms the anterior portion of the tempomandibular articular surface
Mandibular fossa
Poterosuperior to the articular eminence (a groove)
