Temperatures, Heat, and Energy Flow Flashcards
Elements
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by normal physical or chemical means
Atoms
The smallest particle of an element that retains the chemical identity of the element
Compounds
A substance that contains two or more different elements in a chemical combination
Molecules
A group of two or more atoms joined together by a chemical bonds
Temperature
The measure of kinetic energy of individual atoms
What are the four phases of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas, plasma
What are intermolecular forces?
Forces that hold molecules together when they are close. The strength if these forces determines if a molecule is a solid, liquid or gas at a certain temp.
Absolute Zero
The point at which molecules have the lowest possible energy and no longer move at all.
What does specific heat say about a substance?
High specific heat means the temp will change slowly because it needs more energy and low specific heat means the temp will change quick because it needs less energy
