Circular motion Flashcards
What is the difference between angular and linear speed?
Linear speed describes how fast a revolving object travels (units rpm)
Angular speed describes how fast something rotates. (Units mps)
What is the difference between rotation and revolution?
Rotation = to travel in a circle around an internal axis
Revolution = to travel around an external axis
What is the meaning of uniform circular motion?
It is an object that is accelerating even though it’s speed remains the same. It accelerates because the direction is always changing
What is centripetal force?
It is a force on an object moving in a circle
*example merry go round
What is a centrifugal force?
A FAKE FORCE that is outward on an object moving in a circle
*example turkish twist
What is Newtons law of universal gravitation?
It allows you to calculate the gravitational force between 2 objects from their masses and the distance between them.
IMPORTANT: When the masses get bigger the force increases, when the distance gets bigger the force decreases.
