Temperature, Thermal Energy And Heat Flashcards
Define temperature
Measure of average kinetic energy of the particles of a substance
What is temperature measured in?
Fahrenheit,Celsius and kelvin scale
What is thermal energy?
The sum of kinetic energy
The kinetic energy depends on…
The motion of the particles
The potential energy depends on..
How far apart the particles are from each other
What is heat?
The amount of thermal energy that transfers from an area of a higher temperature to an area of a lower temperature
In what ways can heat be transferred?
Conduction, convection and radiation
What is conduction?
Is the transfer of heat by direct contact
What are thermal conductors and insulators? What’s the diff
Thermal conductors can transfer heat easily while insulators do not
What is density?
The amount of particles in a given volume
What does density relate to?
The amount of kinetic energy an object has
How does the amount of kinetic energy relate to the movements and speed of particles?
The more kinetic energy the faster the particles move which leads to low density.
The less kinetic energy the slower the particles move which causes high density.
What happens to fluids when layered upon?
Lower density fluids will always layer themselves above higher density fluids
What is convection?
The transfer of thermal energy in liquids and gases in which fluid actually moves from one place to another
How are convection currents formed?
When fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler fluid sinks. This created a continuous cycle of rising and sinking forming convection currents
