Temperature Relations Flashcards
What is thermoregulation?
Maintenance of temperature of body, or parts of the body
What does poikilothermic mean?
Animals whose body temperature varies with changes in ambient temperature
What does homeothermic mean?
Animals whose body temp remains constant & independent of ambient temperature
What are ectotherms?
Animals who rely on external sources for body temperature regulations
What are endotherms?
Animals that maintain body temperature by internal, metabolic heat production
What are the 4 main ways in which heat is transferred?
- Conduction
- Convection
- Radiation
- Evaporation
What is convection?
The transfer of heat in fluids (air & water)
What is conduction?
Takes place between 2 bodies which are in contact with another
Direct heat transfer of heat from body of higher temp to lower temp
What is free convection?
Convection caused purely by a temp difference which results in a change in density of the fluid
What is forced convection?
When the fluid is moved forcefully
What is radiation?
Heat transfer between 2 objects that are not in contact with each other
(Transfer in form of electromagnetic radiation)
What is a black body?
A body that absorbs all radiation that falls upon it
What is the Q10 coefficient?
Compares the effect of temperature on the metabolism of different species of ectotherms, across the same temperature range
