temperature readings Flashcards
normal body temp
-36.1-38°
how does the hypothalamus regulate body temp
-the hypothalamus regulates body temp by consistently analysing the circulating blood and regulating accordingly which is done by sending nerve impulses to arterioles in the dermis
what does the body do when its cold
-constricts and reduces blood flow so that the body shivers and causes vibrations resulting in heat, heat is conserved and when the body temp returns back to normal the negative response is switched off
what does the body do when its hot
-heat loss is increased by the dilation of arterioles in the dermis increasing blood flow to the skin which stimulates sweat glands to produce sweat until the body temp falls to normal range
infant temp range
-36.5-37.5°
why do we measure body temperature
-indicator of health
-infection detection
-monitoring health conditions
-medication response
-surgical and anaesthesia management
-cyp care
-critical care in ICUs
what is hyperthermia
-high temps
what is hypothermia
-low temps
what are the 3 stages of hyperthermia
-low grade pyrexia: 38°
-moderate to high: 38-40°
-hyperpyrexia: >40°
what are the 3 stages of hyporthermia
-mild hypothermia: 32-35°
-moderate hypothermia: 28-32°
-severe hypothermia: <28°
factors to consider regarding patients temps
-environmental factors
-ovulation in female patients
-ear wax
-exercise and eating
