Temperature Changes Flashcards
What type of reaction is it ?
Neutralisation
What is the independent valuable ( what we measure )
Volume of sodium hydroxide solution
What is the dependant variable ?
Maximum temperature reached
What are the control variables ?
Volume of acid
Concentration of both solutions
What is the first stage ?
Measure 30cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid in a measuring cylinder
What is the second stage ?
Transfer this to a polystyrene cup
And stand it inside a beaker to stop it falling over
Place a thermometer in the cup
What is the third stage ?
Using a measuring cylinder measure 5cm3 of sodium hydroxide solution
Add this to the polystyrene cup
Then fit a plastic lid and place tin the thermometer
What is the fourth stage ?
Using the thermometer gently stir the solution.
The temperature will increase and monitor the temperature rise
When it stops changing record the highest temperate reached
What is the fifth stage ?
Rinse the polystyrene cup
Repeat experiment multiple times using 10cm3 of sodium hydroxide and increase the volume by 5cm3 until we reached 40cm3
What should you do when you have repeated it with every volume ?
Repeat all again once more for two sets of results to remove anomlyies
