temperature and heat Flashcards
4 categories that classify matter
solid: keep its shape
liquid: flows. higher density than gas
gas: flows. form shape of container
plasma: gaseous property. conduct electrictiy
chemical elements
compound of atoms. atom is not indivisible
can gases bond together
they are too weak to bond
bernoulli’s principle
fluid must flow faster in the narrow section for same amount of mass to pass through cross section. his equation is consequence of conservation of energy
zero’th lay of thermodynamics
if 2 objects A and B are thermal equilibrium with object C, then A and B are thermal equilibrium with eachother.
temperature
measured in fahrenheit, celsius and kelvin
rapid moving molecules= high temp
slow moving molecules=low temp
temperature scale
kelvin and celsius only goes up. all research uses kelvin scale
are heat and temperature the same? why?
it is not the same because heat is flow of thermal energy while temperature is average kinetic energy
which is harder to heat
WATER
heat transfer
convection: hot goes up when dense goes down. like wind
conduction: flame in contact with hot pan
examples of heat transfer
conduction, convection and radiation
first law of thermodynamics
conservation of energy. different kinds of energy are interchangable. system can change but not total amount
second law of thermodynamics
heat flow from hot to cold object but WON’T flow from cold to hot
