Oral Temperature
Normal Range: 35.8°C to 37.3°C
Why accurate?: Rich blood supply from carotid arteries responds quickly.
Time to measure: 20-30 seconds

Normal Range: 35.8°C to 37.3°C
Hypothermia: Below 35.8°C
Hyperthermia: Above 37.3°C
Rectal Temperature
Difference: 0.4°C to 0.5°C higher than oral.
Good for: Patients who can’t close mouth, confused patients, using oxygen tubes, facial dysfunction.
Newborns: Route of choice for children under 2 years old.
Axillary Temperature
Best for: Safe option for infants and young children.
Progesterone and Temperature
Effect: Causes a rise in temperature by 0.5°C to 1°C.
Factors Affecting Temperature Measurement
Before measuring: Ensure the patient has not:
Drunk hot/cold liquids (wait 20-30 mins)
Smoked (wait 5 mins)
Chewed gum (wait 2 mins)
Rationale: These can cause false readings.
Temperature Reading
Always read the temperature out loud in Celsius.
