Temperature Flashcards
Thermometric properties of:
mercury-in-glass-thermometer
alcohol in glass thermometer
Volume of a fixed mass of liquid
Thermometric properties of:
resistance thermometer
Resistance of a piece of metal wire
Thermometric properties of:
Thermocouple thermometer
emf produced by two junctions made by joining wires of different metals
Advantages of liquid in glass thermometer
- cheap
- portable
- easily available
- independent of other equipment
Advantages of resistance thermometer
- high accuracy
- high sensitivity (detects small change in temp)
- operates over a wide range of temp
Advantages of thermocouple thermometer
- can be used in tight spaces or precise locn
- high responsiveness: detects rapidly changing temp
- operates over a wide range of temp
How construct a temp scale?
1) Choose an appropriate thermometric substance with a suitable thermometric property (vary linearly with temp)
2) Choose two fixed points (ice points and steam points)
3) Divide interval between two fixed points into 100 equal parts
Define ice point
temperature of pure melting ice at standard Patm (0 degree celsius)
Define steam point
temperature of steam from pure water boiling at standard Patm (100 degree celsius)
