resilience
temperament
innate personality composed of certain traits (that can be altered by environment slightly), acting as an underlying base
significance/nursing role

9 traits
rhythmicity intensity mood threshold activity distractibility adaptability approach-withdrawal Attention-persistence
rhythmicity
how quickly the child gets into the rhythm of every day life; tends to continue but is trainable
intensity
with any emotion, the world knows it; or very subdued
mood
some more positive and some more negative; goes along with intensity
threshold
how much of a stimulus is needed before getting a response (goes with neurological soft signs)
activity
neurological overflow, cannot sit still; boys more active than girls
distractibility
how easily they are distracted to things in the environment
adaptability
long term adaptability (more long term*) to situations; some suffer loss, some adjust quickly
approach-withdrawal
response to a new situation or challenge (dont let them quit right away)
attention-persistence
how long they will stay w an activity even in the face of frustration
authoritarian
not long term; disobedience is punished; will be obedient, compliant kids in early years but in adolescence increased depression and acting out
permissive: warm-indulging
parents love their kids but have no boundaries
- better to be this
permissive: cold-neglecting
uninterested parents without boundaries
authoritative
lowest level of behavioural/MH problems; “democratic parenting”; the whole goal of parenting is INDUCTIVE discipline (teaching the child); have boundaries; goal is to have them understand; recommended/best style
traditional (1989)
mother adopts more nurturing role and father is the more stern disciplinary; 2nd best
vital parenting components
goodness of fit inductive discipline natural and logical consequences encouragement consistency role modelling understanding of child development respect
goodness of fit
when parenting style matches the temp of the child
natural consequences
feeling result of something (falling down tree)
logical consequences
construct consequence that makes sense according to what happened (ie. take bike away for acting out)
