temp and rate Flashcards
what 2 factors will temperature increase the rate of reaction through?
particles gain kinetic energy, move faster and collide more frequently (this effect is minor, there is only a slight change on collision frequency)
proportion of particles with activation energy (Ea) is increased
does the energy change depend on the rate of reaction?
no
what is activation energy?
the minimum energy required for particles to react (there may be more)
energy needed to break bonds in reactants
what is the maxwell boltzmann distribution?
a graph with the energy on the x axis and the number of particles on the y axis
to show the relationship between the two factors for a reaction at different temperatures
why are most collisions unsuccessful?
because one or both of the particles have insufficient energy
why is it more likely that each collision will be successful at higher temps?
because at higher temps, a greater proportion of particles have the required activation energy
it is more likely that each collision will be successful
the frequency of successful collisions increases, so the rate increases
