factors affecting rate Flashcards
what 2 properties are required for collisions to be successful?
sufficient energy
correct orientation
why are most collisions unsuccessful?
because it is very rare that particles will collide in the correct orientation
what can you do to increase the rate of reaction?
increase the frequency of collisions
increase the proportion of collisions that are successful
how can you increase the proportion of successful collisions?
change the energy of particles
change the orientation or particles
what are the 4 factors that can affect rate?
temp
surface area
catalysts
concentration/pressure
what is a method we can use to measure the effect of surface area on rate of reaction for CaCO3 and HCl using mass change?
1) measure 25cm^3 of HCl into a conical flask
2) record mass of apparatus
3) record mass of CaCO3
4) add CaCO3 to HCl on balance
5) start timing
6) record mass every 20s until reaction ceases
7) repeat with EQUAL mass of CaCO3 powder
