Telescopes Flashcards
what can telescopes be used for?
analysing starlight, measuring distances between stars, how hot they are, their chemical make-up, take photographs, used for data
what is a “parallax”?
displacement of an object because of a change in the observer’s point of view (specifically after 6 months).
what can radio telescopes be used for?
Radio telescopes can be used to penetrate through clouds of gas and dust in a dark nebula. It is used by analysing radio signals (radio waves) to get a “picture” of what is going on.
what other types of EM radiation is used?
x-rays, gamma rays, (both give info on black holes). microwave rays (info on beginnings of the universe), ultraviolet rays (spotting star explosions)
what measurement can be made by analysing the amount of light in a star spectrum?
Surface temp
