Teeth Flashcards
Incisors
These are at the front of your mouth. There are 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom. They are used for biting food. Eg apples
Canines
These are at the side of your mouth, and are used for tearing food eg chicken legs
Premolars/molars
These are at the back of your mouth and are used for grinding down food before swallowing it. These are usually the last adult teeth to appear.
Milk teeth
These are the baby teeth that develop after birth. They are usually smaller and whiter than adult teeth, and start to fall out from about 5/6yrs old to make way for the growing adult teeth.
20 of them
Adult teeth
wisdom teeth (back molars) and so altogether there are 32 adult teeth.
Enamel
The outer surface of a tooth. It is the hardest substance in the body, and so protects our teeth from acid and bacteria.
Dentine
This is a soft layer under the enamel. If the enamel becomes damaged, the dentine can become damaged very easily.
Pulp cavity
This cavity runs throughout the tooth from the root to the crown and contains many blood vessels and nerves. When the tooth decays, as far as the nerves, we feel the pain associated with tooth decay.
Cement and periodontal fibres
These hold the tooth in place within the gum.
Tooth decay
If the pH drops below 5.5 then the acid will attack tooth enamel. Because it takes time for the acid to form, the pH drops after sugary food has been eaten.
Differentiated
This means our teeth are different sizes and shapes, to carry out different functions, eg eat different types of foods.
