Tectonics - Part 3 Flashcards
Earthquake hazards will depend on…
- The Extent of Preparation
- The Number of People live in that Area
- The Strength of the Earthquake
How are earthquakes formed?
Results of vibrations in the crust due to plate movement.
What is the Focus?
The source of Shockwave.
What is the Epicentre?
The point on the earth’s crust that is above the Focus.
What are earthquakes measured in?
Measured with a seismograph along the Richter Scale.
What are Tsunamis?
Powerful Ocean Waves caused by Earthquakes
Give an example of a Tsunami
Sumatra in West of Indonesia in Southeast Asia on 2004
What was the height Sumatra and what was it on the richter scale?
30 meters in height and 9.1 on the richter scale
What were the impacts of the Sumatra?
Killed over 200,000 people and left 2 million homeless
What is a Primary impact?
These are the immediate consequences of the event e.g. earthquakes causing buildings to collapse
What is a Secondary Impact?
These are the consequences which results from the primary impacts e.g. homelessness
Give a Case Study of a active Volcano
Laki Volcano in Iceland on 1783
What were the impacts of Laki?
- 200,000 livestock died due to contaminated grass
- 100,000 people died due to famine
- Ash blocked sunlight
- Lava flowed 15km2
Give a Case Study of an Earthquake
Sichuan in Middle East China on 12th May 2008
Give 3 details on the Sichuan
- 8 on the richter scale
- Densely populated and at 4am
- Movement of the Indian Plate against the Eurasian Plate
