Tectonics - Part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
When do volcanos occur?
A
Where weaknesses in the Earth’s crust allow magma gas & water to erupt onto the land & seabed
2
Q
Where do volcanos occur?
A
Occur on the plate margins
3
Q
What are Hot Spots?
A
Are places where the crust is thin & magma maybe able to reach the surface of the earth e.g. Hawaii
4
Q
What can volcanos be?
A
- Extinct (which have no record of tectonic activity)
- Dormant (Volcanos that have not erupted for a long time)
- Active (That have recently erupted)
5
Q
What are Shield Volcanos?
A
Flow for long distance
Runny and Hot lava
6
Q
What are Composite Volcanos?
A
Lava is acidic, thick, sticky and cools quickly with explosive eruptions
7
Q
What are the Five Volcanic Hazards?
A
Lava Flow Lahars Dust & Ash Lava Bombs Pyroclastic Flow
8
Q
Describe the hazard of Lava Flow
A
- Flows down the side and quickly
9
Q
Describe the hazard of Lahars
A
- A mixture of ash and water from melted snow, travel at great speed, making evacuation difficult
10
Q
Describe the hazard of Dust & Ash
A
- Shuts out the sun, when it settles, can completely bury buildings and crops
11
Q
Describe the hazard of Lava Bombs
A
- Large pieces of Rock & Ash thrown into the air
12
Q
Describe the hazard of Pyroclastic Flow
A
- Temperature up to 1000 degrees rush down mountains scorching everything in its path
