tectonic skills Flashcards
1
Q
oceanic crust
A
- under oceans
- denser
- can be subducted
2
Q
continental crust
A
- under land masses
- older
- less often destroyed
3
Q
where are earthquakes found
A
along all kinds of plate margins
4
Q
where are volcanoes found
A
only occur at constructive and destructive plate margins
5
Q
why do earthquakes and volcanoes happen on plate boundaries
A
- plate boundary weakest in crust
- movement of plates
6
Q
destructive plate boundary
A
- oceanic and continental
- oceanic plate forced under continental plate (subduction zone)
- friction melts oceanic plate
- yes earthquakes
- yes volcanoes
7
Q
collision zones
A
- two continental collide
- both forced up and form fold mountains
8
Q
conservative plate margin
A
- two plates slip past each other
- opposite direction/ same direction different rates
- do not move smoothly
- build up of friction released = earthquake
9
Q
why people live near volcanoes
A
- energy (heat and gases provide geothermal energy)
- agriculture (good minerals for farming)
- tourism (active volcanoes = exciting)
- precious minerals ( found only near volcanoes)
10
Q
where are tectonic hazards distributed
A
places with higher land elevation (land more unstable)
11
Q
why do tectonic hazards happen
A
tectonic plates shift
12
Q
effects of tectonic hazards (primary)
A
- people killed/ injured
- property destroyed
- roads destroyed
- water pipes and such destroyed
13
Q
effects of tectonic hazard (secondary)
A
- money spent repairing -> economy slows down
- blocked transport -> no emergency services rescuing people
- burst water pipes -> no fresh water
- broken gas pipes -> fires
- rainwater + meltwater + volcanic ash = mudflows
- ash -> fertile soil
