10
Q

why do tectonic plates move

A

due to convection currents in the mantle

11
Q

what are convection currents

A

flows of heat rising from the earth’s core, spreading, cooling and sinking again

12
Q

how do convection currents form

A
  1. lower parts of the mantle heat up and rise ( becoming less dense)
2.as they move to the top of the mantle, they cool down, then slowly sink (becoming more dense)
  2. circular motions- convection currents, which cause plates to move

2 plates move towards each other

oceanic plate meets a continental plate

16
Q

what happens at a destructive plate boundary

A

the denser oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle and destroyed , often creating a volcano

17
Q

what is a constructive plate boundary

A

2 plates move away from each other

18
Q

what happens at the constructive plate boundary

A

magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap and cools, creating a new crust

19
Q

what is a collision plate boundary

A

both plates are made from continental crust and move towards each other

20
Q

what happens at a collision plate boundary

A

both plates are forced upwards, creating fold mountains

21
Q

how is the Himalayas formed

A

Eurasian and Indian plate collided

22
Q

what is a conservative plate boundary

A

2 plates slide past each other

same direction, different speeds

23
Q

what happens at a conservative plate boundary

A

friction between plates build stresses and trigger shallow- focus earthquakes when they slip

24
Q

why are there no volcanos at conservative plate boundaries

A

there’s no magma

25
what is the atmosphere
the layer of gasses above the earth's surface
26
what is a hotspot
places where the magma rises through the mantle and forces through crust, creating a volcano
27
state the type of tectonic plate margin where subduction happens
destructive
