Tectonic Plates Flashcards
What is the Mid-Atlantic ridge?
The mid-Atlantic ridge is a mountain ridge that runs 10000 miles along the sea floor which is the border of multiple of the Earth’s plates.
What are the four layers of the Earth?
The three layers of the Earth are the Inner core, Outer core, Mantle and the Lithosphere which contains all of the Earth’s plates.
How fast do tectonic plates move?
The plates move at roughly the same speed your fingernails grow.
What is the ring of fire?
The ring of fire is a chain of volcanoes spread across multiple islands.
What are plate tectonics?
Plate tectonics explains the features and movements of the Earth’s surface in the present and the past.
Why do tectonic plates move?
Tectonic plates are constantly moving due to the convection currents in the mantle.
What are the types of tectonic plate movements?
Tectonic plate movements include; Convergent plate boundaries (where one plate moves toward another), Divergent plate boundaries (where one plate moves away from another) and Transform plate boundaries (where one plate moves past another).
What are tectonic plates?
Tectonic plates are sections of the Earth’s lithosphere which are constantly moving and cause volcanoes, earthquakes, mountains, etc.
