Land Degradation Flashcards
What is land degradation?
Land degradation is caused by multiple forces, including extreme weather conditions (particularly drought), and human activities that pollute or degrade the quality of soils and land utility negatively affecting food production, livelihoods and the production and provision of other ecosystem goods and services.
How do humans utilise landscapes?
Humans may utilise landscapes to obtain food and other essential elements as well as to graze animals, grow crops and to gather resources.
How do humans change landscapes?
Humans change landscapes by clearing forests and changing the shape of the land in order to graze animals and grow crops, mountains are moved and rivers are diverted in order to then build cities and towns on top and new land may even be created from the sea in coastal areas.
Air quality is changed alongside climate, presence of flora and fauna and landforms are created or destroyed.
