Tectonic Plates Flashcards
5 earth facts
1 globe
2 hemispheres
5 oceans
7 continents
8 billion people
What are lines of latitude
Lines of latitude point in a east-west direction and allow us say how far we are north or south
What are lines of longitude
Lines of longitude run from north-south and allow us to say to say where we are, east or west
What is the prime meridian
The prime meridian is the central line of longitude on the globe
How often does the earth rotate on its axis
Every 24hrs
What is the direction of the earths rotate
East
Earth is the ……. Planet away from the sun and is the …… largest in the solar system
earth is the 3RD planet away from the sun and is the 5TH largest in our solar system
What is used to calculate the time around the world
Lines of longitude
Where is all time calculated from?
The prime ,meridian
How do you work out time
To work out time anywhere in the world you need to know it’s LONGITUDE, east or west of the prime meridian.
How to work out, How many degrees does the earth turn in a hour
The earth turns 360 degrees every 24 hrs
So the you divide 360 ➗ 24
= 15 degrees
= 1hr
What is the axis
The axis is the imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole
What does the tilt of the earth do?
The tilt of the earth results in the sun being higher in the sky during the summer months which increases solar heating.
What and when is the summer solstice
The summer solstice is out longest day and it is on June 21st
What and when is the winter solstice
The winter solstice is the shortest day and is on December 22nd
What and when is the spring equinox
The spring equinox is equal day and night and it’s on March 21st
What and when is the autumn equinox
The autumn equinox is also equal day and night and it’s in September 22nd
Why do seasons happen
Seasons happen because the yearly revolution of the earth going right round the sun and the tilt of the earths axis
What are the hottest months in the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere
June, July and August are the hottest months in the northern hemisphere and December, January and February are the hottest months in the southern hemisphere.
Who was the astronomer to model the universe with the sun in the centre
Nicolaus Copernicus.
What is plate tectonics
The study of the movement of earths surface
What causes the plates to move
Heat rises from the core and causes plate to move very slowly
What is Pangea
It was when most of the land mass was joined together in a super continent called Pangea
What Pangaea mean in greek
Pan meaning all gaea meaning earth
The earth is made up of how many layers
4
What are the 4 layers of the earth
Inner core
Outer core
Mantle
Crust
The inner core is …… and the outer core is…..
Inner core= Solid
Outer core = liquid
What is the mantle made out of
Molten rock
What is the crust made out of
Huge moving slabs called tectonic playes
How deep is the crust
10-70km
How deep is the outer core
3000 km
How deep is the mantle
2900km
What state is the inner core
Solid
What state is the outer core
Liquid
What state is the mantle
Semi-fluid
What state is the crust
Solid and cracked into place
4 types of plate movements
