Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Earth’s outer layer called
A
The crust
2
Q
Tectonic plates
A
Earth’s crust divided into slabs
3
Q
What are the 2 different types of crust
A
- continental (thick, less dense)
- oceanic (thinner, more dense)
4
Q
What are the 3 types of plate margins
A
- Destructive (towards each other)
- constructive (away from each other)
- conservative (side by side)
5
Q
Why do people choose to live by plate margins even though it is dangerous?
A
- valuable minerals
- tourism
6
Q
Destructive volcanoes
A
- denser plate (oceanic) subducts
beneath the other (continental) into
the mantle - friction occurs causing it to melt and
become molten magma - magma forces its way up to the
surface (vents) to form a volcano
7
Q
Constructive volcanoes
A
- 2 Plates move apart
- magma then rises in between to fill the
gap - this creates sheila volcanoes
