Meanders and Ox-bow lakes Flashcards
1
Q
Where are meanders formed?
A
Middle Course
2
Q
How are meanders formed
A
- Erosion occurs at the outer bends of the river
forming river cliffs due to the fast flow of
water because the river channel is deeper - Deposition occurs at the inner bank forming a
slip off slope due to the current being slower
because it is shallower.
3
Q
How do oxbow lakes form
A
- Further hydraulic action and abrasion causes
the outer banks to get closer to each other
forming a small part of land between them - The river breaks through the land, usually
during a flood. - river takes the shortest/ fastest route
- Deposition cuts off the meander forming an
ox-bow lake
