Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What are the two types of tectonic plates
Oceanic plate - formed thin and dense . formed out of basalt (Black lava flow)
Continental plate - older and much thicker, less dense and is mainly created out of granite
Convection currents
These are current of heat , belief that these are what mainly cause the movement of the plates
Explaining why there is rising magma at the constructive plate margin and the sinking convention currents sink with the destructive plate margin
Gravitational sliding
Ridge push - at constructive plate margins when fresh mana rises to the top. The two plates must move away from each other at they reach a higher elevation gravity pushes force which causes plates to slide downwards
Slab pull - At destructive plate margin gravity pulses down the thicker denser plate causing it to sink other the other pulling the rest of the plate with it.
Global trends in earthquakes
- Majority cause a cluster to form a linear belts that link with the plates
- Narrow belts with sparsely distributed e.g mid-atlantic these correspond with constructive plates. s
- The thicker belts eg around the Pacific Ocean. These correspond with the thicker plates.
- Isolated earthquakes such as in the northern Europe (hot spots) due to mining. oil extraction or reservoir construction.
Why do people live in hazardous areas (Enviro)
- ## They do not happen often
