Q

what is the asthenosphere?

A

is a dense, molten layer at the top of the mantle. The tectonic plates float on top of it.

Q

what is the continental crust?

A

This forms the land. This is mode mostly of granite, which is a low density, igneous rock. It is very thick. Continental crust is old.

Q

what is the oceanic crust?

A

This is much thinner. It’s also denser and also made of an igneous rock called basalt. Oceanic crust is new.

Q

What happens when oceanic crust and continental crust crash together?

A

The oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust which is why the oceanic crust is new, it dies and is reborn lol. When the oceanic crust subducts, this can cause tsunamis and earthquakes.

Q

Explain how the core gives out heat.

A

Our core gives out extreme heat which makes magma rise. The magma rises but the crust is blocking it’s way so it either goes left or right.

As the magma moves left or right it moves the crust with it. This causes the continents to move.

17
Q

Which of the 4 boundary types cause extreme earthquakes?

A

Conservative

18
Q

How are destructive boundaries caused?

A

Oceanic plate is subducted under continental plate

19
Q

How are collision boundaries caused?

A

Continental vs Continental

20
Q

How are Constructive boundaries caused?

A

2 plates moving apart (most likely 2 oceanic plates)

21
Q

How are Conservative boundaries caused?

A

2 plates moving past each other
