Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What makes up the geosphere?
the crust asthenosphere lithosphere mantle outer core inner core
what is the core made from?
iron and nickel
What are the 2 types of crusts?
Continental and oceanic
what is the lithosphere?
it’s the top layer of the mantel plus the crust.
what is the asthenosphere?
is a dense, molten layer at the top of the mantle. The tectonic plates float on top of it.
what is the continental crust?
This forms the land. This is mode mostly of granite, which is a low density, igneous rock. It is very thick. Continental crust is old.
what is the oceanic crust?
This is much thinner. It’s also denser and also made of an igneous rock called basalt. Oceanic crust is new.
What happens when oceanic crust and continental crust crash together?
The oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust which is why the oceanic crust is new, it dies and is reborn lol. When the oceanic crust subducts, this can cause tsunamis and earthquakes.
The Earth’s crust is broken up into lots of pieces like a jigsaw - these are known as ______.
plates
Explain how the core gives out heat.
Our core gives out extreme heat which makes magma rise. The magma rises but the crust is blocking it’s way so it either goes left or right.
As the magma moves left or right it moves the crust with it. This causes the continents to move.
Why does heat come from the core?
because it’s radioactive.
Why is our magnetic field useful?
it protects us from the sun.
What are the 4 boundary types?
Destructive, Collision, Constructive, Conservative,
Which of the 4 boundary types cause big earthquakes, tsunamis and explosive volcanoes?
Destructive
Which of the 4 boundary types cause big earthquakes?
Collision
