Techniques Used By Supermarkets To Sell Products Flashcards
At the entrance
Placement of the items at eye level
Fruit and veg
Are placed near the front of the supermarket. Consumers associate fruit and veg with freshness and quality, having them at the front has a positive effect on sales
On the shelf ( 2 points)
People tend to look at things on a shelf from left or right. So, for example in a display of cans of soup. The most expensive ones are positioned on the right and the cheapest is put either on the top or bottom shelf to prevent customers from seeing them too easily.
Items that appeal to children are displayed on low shelves so they can pester their parents too buy them ( e.g yoghurts with cartoon characters)
Going down the aisle (2 seperate points)
The central aisle in a busy supermarket is called the power aisle, as it is the main path through which customers make their way through the store. As customers turn their shopping trolley at the end of an aisle, they slow down. The shelves at the end of the aisle are called ‘hot spots’ where Supermarkets display special offers to encourage impulse purchases. Aisles are used to group items together around a theme e.g having a barbecue ,might be grouped together. This can encourage consumers to buy more than they had on their list
Bread and milk
They are essential purchases for most customers, they are usually displayed at the back of the supermarket so the customers have to walk past displays of many other goods that might appeal to them
At the checkout
Displays at the checkout are the supermarkets last chance to tempt customers to buy more. Checkout displays may include sweets, but many other goods are put their too
