Metonymy
Metonymy is a thing or concept referred to by the name of something closely associated with that thing or concept. eg. suit for businessman
Internal Rhyme
Is rhyme that occurs within a single line of verse, or between internal phrases across multiple lines.
Characterisation
Reveals a character’s personality. Characters may be revealed using their actions, words or thoughts or other characters’ words or thoughts.
Composition
The body of important features established by the author.
Oxymoron
Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas or words are joined to create an effect. eg. Cruel kindness or living death.
Caesura
Is a break in a verse where one phrase ends and the following phrase begins. eg. hyphen/dash or colon
Juxtaposition
Juxtaposition is where two or more ideas, places, characters, and their actions are placed side by side in a poem, for the purpose of developing comparisons and contrasts.
Volta
is a dramatic turn of thought or argument
Free Verse
Does not use consistent meter patterns or rhyme therefore tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.
Foot
A foot usually contains one stressed syllable and at least one unstressed syllable
Meter
Is a stressed and unstressed syllabic pattern in a verse, or within the lines of a poem
Soliloquy
An act of speaking their thoughts aloud when by themselves.
Bildungsroman
Traces the origins and development of a central character across time.
Salience
The quality of being particularly noticeable or important
Blank Verse
Verse without rhyme, especially that which uses iambic pentameters.
