Repetition
The act of repeating the same sound, word or phrase
Imagery
Figurative (non literal) language to create associations or emotions
Alliteration
Repetition of the same initial consonant sound throughout a line of verse
Imperative
A verb which expresses a command or request
Sibilance
Repetition of the ‘S’ sound in words close together
Emotive Vocabulary
Adjectives, Adverbs, Nouns and Verbs designed to provoke emotions
Anaphora
Repetition of the same word at the beginning of several clauses or lines
Exclamations
A word or phrase that expresses strong emotion
Superlatives
Description of something as being the best or having the most superior quality
Antithesis
Contrast or opposition of words in a balanced construction
Puns
Words which sound the same but have two possible meanings
Triplets
Arrangement of three words or phrases or clauses for effect
Modal verbs
Verbs used to show something we believe is possible or likely to happen in the future
Negatives
Using negative adverbs such as ‘not’, ‘isn’t’ , ‘never’
Enjambement
When lines ‘run-on’ to the next line, without a punctuation mark, creating a sense of flow
Antilabe
When a single line/rhythm is shared between characters, they complete each others line, it implies closeness
Apostrophy
The use of ‘o’ to address an idea, an abstract quality, a dead or absent person, as if present and capable of understanding
Semantic field (lexical suit)
A set of words related in meaning
Caesura
A stop or pause in the middle of a line
Euphemism
Word or phrase with a sexual connotation
Meter
The patterns of unstressed and stressed syllables in verse
