advantages of Meta search engines
Meta search engines are very fast.
These engines are a quick way of finding out which (individual) engines are retrieving the best results for you.

Individual search engines provide a wide range of responses to specific queries.
disadvantages of Meta search engines
When using a Meta search engine it will not return all of the results retrieved from the individual engines
Subject directories
unlike search engines, are created and maintained by human editors. The editors’ review and select sites for inclusion in their directories on the basis of previously determined selection criteria.
Portals
Are directories that have been created or taken over by commercial interests and then reconfigured to act as gateways to the web.
Advantages of Subject Directories
Subject directories are best for browsing and for searches of a more general nature (great for popular topics, organizations, commercial sites, and products).
Advantages of portals
Portal sites not only link to the popular
subject categories, but they also offer additional services such as email, current news, stock quotes, travel information, and maps.
Disadvantages of Subject Directories
Subject Directories tend to be smaller than search engine databases (typically indexing only the home pages or top-level pages of a site).
Search Tips/Examples (only need 3)
Be Specific Dublin Core metadata
✓ Whenever possible, use nouns and objects as keywords Hurricane Hugo

✓ To ensure that they will be searched, put a +sign in front of each one

When this operation is used during a search only documents that contain every one of the keywords you enter.
The more you enter, the narrower your search becomes.
OR
When this operation is used during a search more documents will be returned in which either or both keywords appear. Since the OR operation is usually used for keywords that are similar or synonymous.
The more keywords you enter, the more documents you will retrieve.
NOT or AND NOT
When these operations are used during a search, the search is limited by returning only your first keyword but not the second, even if the first word appears in that document, too.
