Q

What is a gear?

A

Provide a gear reduction in motorized equipment key =

a small motor spinning very fast can provide enough power for a device , but not enough torque

Q

What are Spur gears?

A

MOST COMMON TYPE OF GEAR
have straight teeth and are mounted on parallel shafts, sometimes many spur gears are used at once to create very large gear reductions

Q

What are Bevel gears?

A

Useful when the direction of a shaft’s rotation needs to be changed.
TEETH = can be straight , spiral or hypoid

Q

What are Worm gears?

A

Used when larger gears reductions are needed,

The worm can easily turn the gear, but the gear cant turn the worm

Q

Spur gear ( Advantage )

A
  • Highly reliable
  • Simplest , easiest to design & manufacture
  • More efficient if you compare it with helical gear of same size

Q

Spur gear ( Disadvantage)

A
  • Slow - speed gears
  • Cant transfer power between non-parallel shafts
  • Produce a lot of noise when operating at high speeds

Q

Bevel gear ( Advantage )

A
  • Makes it possible to change the operating angle

- Differing the number of teeth on each wheel allows mechanical advantage

16
Q

Worm gear or wheel ( Advantages )

A
  • They are self locking
  • They occupy less space
  • They have good meshing effectiveness
17
Q

Worm gear or wheel ( Disadvantages )

A
  • Materials are expensive
  • Worm drives have high power losses
  • They produce a lot of heat
18
Q

Rack & Pinion ( Advantages )

A
  • Cheap
  • Compact
  • Robust ( strong & healthy)
19
Q

Rack & Pinion ( Disadvantages )

A
  • Can only work with certain levels of friction
too high = require more force to operate
  • Due to the friction = under a constant wear, possibly needing a replacement after a certain time
