What are Teams?
A small group of people with complementary skills, who work together to accomplish shared goals while holding themselves mutually accountable for performance results
What is Teamwork?
The process of people working together to accomplish goals.
What is Synergy?
Is the creation of a whole that is greater then the sum of its parts, in teams it is seen when members’ individual talents and efforts are used to achieve/create.
How can Teams be used help the organisation and their members?
More resources for problem-solving. Improved creativity and innovation. Improved quality of decision-making. Greater commitments to tasks. Higher motivation through collective action. Better control and work discipline. More individual satisfaction.
What are cross-functional teams?
Brings together members from a different functional departments to work on a specific problem/task.
What are Virtual Teams?
A team who works together to solve problems through computer-based interactions. Can be difficult for team to establish good working relationships due to lack of face-to-face time.
What are Self-Managing Teams?
Members have the authority to make decisions about how they share and complete their work.
What are Chartered Teams?
Self-Managing teams that create and rely on a performance contract to guide its behaviour.
What are the five stages in a Team Life cycle?
Forming - Initial orientation, interpersonal testing
Storming - Conflict over tasks and teamwork
Norming - Consolidation around task and operating agendas
Performing - Teamwork and focused task performance
Adjourning - Task completion and disengagement
What are Norms?
Behaviours, rules or standards expected to be followed by team members.
What are the Guidelines to build positive Norms?
Act as a positive role model.
Reinforce the desired behaviour.
Control results with reviews and feedback.
Train and orient new members, recruit new members with desired behaviour.
Regularly discuss progress.
Use team decision-making methods.
What is a Decentralised Communication network?
Allows all members to communicate directly with one another.
Effective when teams are interacting intensively and members are working closely together as close coordination of activities needed.
What is a Centralised Communication Network?
Activities are coordinated and results pooled by the central point of control.
Appropriate when team members work on tasks independently, with the required work being divided among them.
What is Decision-Making?
The process of choosing between alternative courses of action.
What are the 6 methods used by teams when making decisions?
Lack of Response. Authority Rule. Minority Rule. Majority Rule. Consensus. Unanimity.
