Forming stage of group development
The team acquaints and established group rules. Formalities are preserved and the members are treated as strangers.

- any constraints are identified
Managerial Strategies to Support:
- encourage the team to get to know each other through activities and icebreakers
- create a relaxed and friendly environment to ease anxiety
- encourage open communication
- clarify expectations, goals and responsibilities
- give guidance
- set goals for the team
Storming stage of group development
Members start to communicate their feelings but still see themselves as individuals. Resist control and show hostility.
- this is the confrontation stage
- disputes and power struggles arise
- criticisms and questioning of goals
Managerial Strategies to Support:
- mentor the team
- encourage open communication
- help find compromise between team and individual goals/needs
- avoid getting involved in issues with team members help with task related issues
- promote team goals
Norming stage of group development
People feel part of the team and recognise they can achieve work if they accept other view points
- work is divided amongst members
- members take on responsibility
- any conflicts are resolved
- common practices are established
Managerial Strategies to Support:
- encourage group discussions
- confirm group boundaries and goals
- maintain good communication
- help insure everyone has a shared vision, goal and identifies with the team
