Q

Fayol’s 14 principals of management

A

Division of Labour - employees should be trained in one area and build up expertise in that task. Specialisation results in increased efficiency and output levels
Authority - managers must be able to give out instructions and exercise authority to ensure these orders are carried out
Discipline- company policy, rules and regulations must be followed and consequences must be in place to those who don’t obey
Unity of Command - each employee must have only one manager
Unity of Decision - to minimise confusion and conflict, teams with the same tasks should be working for the same managers and toward the same goal
Subordination - company objective should guide the firm not dictate the personal agenda of an employee or group as their interest and intentions should not control the group decisions
Remuneration - rewarding their employees for their work through financial and non-financial incentives
Centralisation - the involvement of employees in core decision making through the use of quality circles etc will minimise their resistance to change
Scalar Change - the line of authority for top managers to lowest ranks represents the scalar chain. Communication should follow this chain and employees should be aware of their position in this chain of command
Order - the systematic arrangement of resources: people, machinery, and finances. The work place must be clean, tidy, organised and efficient to achieve maximum effectiveness
Equity - managers must be objective and fair at all times. Kindness should be known as well as discipline if necessary
Stability of Personnel - retaining a core, trained and effective workforce is a primary concern. High employee turnover should be avoided. Work force planning should be key to ensuing flexibility and success
Innovate - permitting workers freedom to complete tasks and execute plans in their own way will result in increased effort
Espirit de Corps - promoting team spirit and unity will minimise conflict and increase productivity
