Team Learning - Collagen Flashcards

1
Q

What is the role of glycine in collagen structure?

A

Glycine occurs at every third amino acid in the pro-collagen chains (in each alpha-helix of triple helix). This allows the three strands to wind tightly around each other into the triple helix.

Q

What is the role of proline in collagen structure?

A

Proline becomes hydroxylated, allowing the chain to form a tight helix, required to form the triple helix.

Q

What is the role of Lysine in the collagen structure?

A

Lysine becomes hydroxylated and glycosylated - hydroxylysine and lysyl oxidase (with copper and B6) allow for stabilization of fibrils through cross-linking. (Allowing the triple helices to be cross-linked together in fibrils (for stability))
