Teaching Styles Flashcards
What are the 4 different types of teaching styles?
- Command
- Reciprocal
- Guided Discovery/Discovery Learning
- Problem Solving
What is command style teaching?
The teacher makes all of the decisions
Authoritarian style
All learners are treated the same way
Learner takes no responsibility
Not required to think outside of the objective
What are the disadvantages of command style teaching?
- It does not cater for differing abilites - so if you cannot do it you may lose motivation or suffer from anxiety
- It does not allow students to be creative
- It does not allow interaction between members
What is recipricol teaching style?
The teacher hands over part of the teaching to other members of the group.
Performers learn from eachother
Teacher demonstrates skill
Learners work in pairs/groups
One performer + One observer
What are the advantages of recipricol training?
- It promotes communication and interaction between group members.
- It may generate new ideas for the coach
- It is good for personal development - coaching skills may improve
- It gives immediate personal feedback to the performer
What are the disadvantages of recipricol teaching style?
- Some students may not like being taught by their peers and may cause conflict
- It takes more time to set and oversee the tasks
- Pupils may give incorrect information
What is discovery learning?
Objective set by teacher in a form of a problem
Learner works out solution
What is the problem solving approach?
Teacher sets objective e.g. how to get past an opponent and learner finds own way of solving the problem
Cognitive approach
What are the advantages of discovery learning and problem solving teaching styles?
- Interaction between group members can be promoted
- Students can work at their own pace and can be creative to extend the skill
- There is a mix of abilites that can be catered for
- Sense of satisfaction can be gained from producing correct results
What are the disadvantages of problem solving/discovery learning teaching styles?
- There may be danger involved if the students fail to use the correct techniques
- It is more time consuming
- Incorrect results could be achieved without teacher supervision, and the group may lack control.
What should be considered when deciding on what teaching style to use?
- Teacher - their knowledge & experience
- Activity - complex, demanding & the risk
- Learner - skill, fitness, knowldege, experince and motivation
- Learning situation - environment, size of group, equipment & time
