Methods of Presenting Practice Flashcards
What is distributed practice?
Allowing rest intervals between practice sessions.
What is fixed practice?
Repetition of a drill.
What is massed practice?
Training sessions with no rest interval.
What is part practice?
The skill is divided into sub-routines in order to focus on specific cues during practice.
What is varied practice?
Using different drills and methods in training sessions.
What is whole practice?
Skills are practised in their entirety, with sub-routines intact.
When is whole practice used?
- The skill is fast and ballistic
- The skill is highly organised and cannot be broken down
- The skill is simple
- The skill is discrete
- The performer is advanced
- The kinaesthesis of the whole skill is required.
- Consistency is required
- Links between sub-routines need to be maintained.
- Motor programmes need to be developed.
What are the possible disadvantages of whole practice?
- There may be too much information to process
- The performer has to be fit and capable
- Not helpful for beginners
What is the whole-part-whole method of practice?
The whole skill is taught, then weaknesses are highlighted, practiced separtely and then put back into the whole skill.
When is a whole-part-whole method of practice used?
- A beginner is doing a complex task
- An experienced player is having problems
- A weakness can be highlighted
- Motivation
- Links between sub-routines need to be maintained
- There is a need for feedback and error correction.
What is part-practice?
Breaking the sklls down into parts or sub-routines and then theahing them seperatley before putting them together.
What are the 2 methods of part-pratice?
- The pure part method
- The progressive part method
What is the pure part method?
Involves teaching the skill one part at a time and then putting it all together at the end.
What is the pure part method used for?
Skills that are easily broken down, complex or dangerous.
What is the progressive part method?
When the 1st part of the skill is taught and then the rest of the parts are added in sequence.
