Te Whare Tapa Wha emerged from “the Maori health perspective” that was originally known as a four-sided health construct, it was later that it was compared to a four-sided house where each wall would ensure strength and symmetry. While each wall also represents and important quality of health.

The four walls within Te Whare Tapa Wha include, Taha Tinana (physical health), Taha Wairua (spiritual health), Taha Whanau (family health) and Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional health)
Describe Taha Tinana
Taha Tinana focuses on the physical aspect of health while having the ability to for physical growth and development
Describe Taha Whanau
Taha Whanau focuses on the family aspect of health that represents the ability to belong, to be able to come together and share where individuals have come from. Taha Whanau acknowledges the importance of family and how family contributes to curing and assisting illness.
Describe Taha Hinengaro
Taha Hinengaro focuses on the mental and emotional aspect of health. While Hinengaro is about being able to communicate as well as the way in which our brain and body works, it is mostly about the way in which we express our thoughts and our feelings. Taha Hinengaro is all about our mind and our body being inseparable.
Describe Taha Wairua
Taha Wairua focuses on the spiritual aspects of health and is also considered to be the most essential requirement for health according to Maori health. Taha Wairua determines us as individuals with the ability to have faith and understanding of our identity.
