TE Flashcards
Why are sc and zn not co socered transition elements?
Sn has no d electrons while zn has a completely filled d subshell
Why does transition elements have relatively invariant atomic/ionic radii?
Across the series, electrons are added to inner 3d electron(4s is outer) providing more shielding for the 4s electrons so effective nuclear charge is offset and varies only slightly. But period 2 and 3 electrons are added to outermost shells , shielding effect relatively constant
Why 1st and 2nd IE across te series relatively invariant?
Inner 3d got shielding(across te series e added to 3d is more significant for shielding) so nuclear charge increase is offset. But for 3rd and 4th ie inner 3d electrons removed shielding stays almost constant.
Why anomalies like fe and Co 3rd and 4th IE lower
Inter electron relylsion between paired d electrons in the doubly filled d orbital (3d6)
