Q
What is ‘hot air’, and how does it relate to periodontal disease?
A
‘Hot air’ is a layman term commonly used by the Cantonese people to mean that a person has an illness which exhibits the
excess Yang syndromes, which include redness, swelling, and fever. When a px has “hot air”, the aim of TCM therapy is to clear away the excessive Yang, to remove toxicity, and/or to nourish Yin.
Inflammation –> Periodontal disease
Many Chinese attribute swelling gums to hot air rather than periodontal diseases. As a result, they do not seek dental treatment and this worsens the periodontal disease.
