What is the implication of the medication for depression and how it affects your treatment plan? (7)

A

• Xerostomia (Solution: fluoride varnish, provide artificial saliva, moisturizing gel, drink more water)

  • Lower blood pressure (may get dizzy easier)
  • Less interest in good oral hygiene (Be more supportive, non-judgmental, Use motivational interview)
  • Drug interactions
  • May want to consult physician prior to treatment (o Patient current psychological status, medication, whether status stable and suitable for treatment)

How does drug interactions affect your treatment plan?

  1. Use with NSAID increase bleeding risk

SSRI may deplete platelet serotonin, which is needed for aggregation

Short term NSAID use should be ok (2-4 days) – avoid in elderly +/ history of GI ulcer/bleeding

  1. LA with adrenaline has significant effect on cardiovascular system like risk of hypertension and arrhythmias

Use with proper aspiration technique and no more than 3 cartridges of adr-containing LA used or use alternative 3% mepivacaine without adr
