Indigenous
Indigenous people are the people who inhabited the Americas before the arrival of the colonists.
Maya
Maya, Mesoamerican Indians occupying a nearly continuous territory in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and northern Belize. They developed the science of astronomy, calendar systems, and hieroglyphic writing.
Aztec
The Aztecs were the Native American people who dominated northern Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest in the early 16th century.
The Columbian Exchange
The process by which commodities, people, and diseases crossed the Atlantic is known as the Columbian Exchange.
Inca
Inca, South American Indians, remembered for their contributions to religion, architecture, and their famous network of roads throughout the region. You may have heard of Cusco, Machu Picchu, The Lost City of the Incas, The Sacred Valley of The Incas, and the legendary Inca Trail.
Encomienda
Encomienda (roughly translated: trustee) was a formal system of forced labor in Spanish colonies in Latin America and the Philippines, intended to encourage conquest and colonization.
Missions System
The missions created new communities where the Native Americans received religious education and instruction.
Conquistador
The Spanish Conquerors of Mexico and Peru
Hernan Cortez
He was a Spanish conquistador who overthrew the Aztec empire (1519–21) and won Mexico for the crown of Spain.
Francisco Pizzaro
Francisco Pizarro was known for being an explorer and conqueror. He is also known for conquering the Inca Empire and founding the city of Lima (the actual capital of Peru).
Bartolome de la Casa
Bartolome de Las Casas (1484-1566) was a Spanish Dominican friar and former conquistador who revealed the atrocities of the conquests of New Spain and Peru and who strove to protect the basic rights of indigenous peoples in the Spanish Empire.
